Frugal Floozie Friday - Jefferson Market and Cakery

Craig has a sweet tooth. His makes my own infamous one hang its head in shame.

So it didn't take a lot of work to persuade Craig to join me at Jefferson Market and Cakery one afternoon for coffee and treats. Not a full meal, admittedly; but then, one doesn't always require a full meal. Sometimes one just requires a bit of comfort and a little something delicious. These desserts were perfect.

For less than $5 per person - our mandatory Frugal Floozie Friday budget - I was able to enjoy the gorgeous Red Velvet cupcake pictured above plus a cup of coffee: $1.75 for the former, $2 for the latter (a small one). Rich frosting, tender cake ... a lovely snack.

Craig chose the beautiful Berry Bar for $3.50 - a crisp crust, a thin layer of custard, ripe fruits, and a crumbly topping.  A bit sweet, a bit tart, and entirely wonderful!

Coffees and chai range in price from $2-2.75. Now that Spring is here and cool drinks are desired, both lemonade and iced tea cost only $2.

You can also buy sandwiches, ranging in price from $6.99-7.99; they're served with house-made chips. One of these could be split, making sure to save room for one of the amazing pastries, and you could still come in under our mandatory budget.

Jefferson Market is a bright, friendly place that offers free wi-fi and a warm welcome to loiter while talking or working. And it's such fun to peer behind the back counter to watch the artists at the Cakery creating unique masterpieces for special events; they make such gorgeous celebration cakes!

The cupcake is beautiful, but I'd take that berry bar for sure. And then maybe, if I were still hungry, would think about a sandwich. :-) Glad you showed a shot of the interior. It looks like a fun place to visit.

Okay, Mary, I am going to have to call you out on the price of drinks. I think the mark-up on drinks (tea, lemonade, soda) is the biggest rip-off right now going in the restaurant biz. $2 for a drink is RIDICULOUS considering the cost to the establishment to make/sell the drink. It is the most marked up thing on the menu. It costs pennies to make and they are selling it for dollars. It is insane. So, ONLY $2 for a tea or lemonade kinda sorta made my jaw drop in your post. Had you said, "There was the traditional $2 charge for tea or lemonade, but pretty much every place is charging that for beverages." I would have nodded sadly and moved on. It is the TRUTH. Every place is charging that for beverages. It sucks. But please don't say ONLY. They are all BLEEDING us on drinks. Rant over.

Now, the desserts looked delicious and reasonably priced. In fact, they looked like they might be less than some of the places I have been recently. So, it might have even been fair to say that the desserts are a real bargain (if they are really amazing) and the restaurant makes up the loss it takes on undercharging for the desserts in the profit it makes on the drinks... which is the same price that you would pay for a drink anyplace else. And all for under $5.

Did you notice that you just found my Restaurant Pet Peeve? The price of drinks in restaurants. I pay it. I just don't want anyone to ever say ONLY. Because it isn't an ONLY. It is OBNOXIOUS.

For the record... I still love you.

Both the cupcake and the crumb cake look amazing. I'd take a sweet treat for lunch any day!
